Effects of Parity and Serum Prolactin Levels on the Incidence and Regression of DMBA-Induced Tumors in OFA hr/hr Rats

چکیده
Prolactin (PRL) is a key player in the development of mammary cancer. We studied the effects of parity or hyperprolactinemia on mammary carcinogenesis in OFA hr/hr treated with 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene. They were divided into three groups: nulliparous (Null), primiparous (PL, after pregnancy and lactation), and hyperprolactinemic rats (I, implanted in the arcuate nucleus with 17β-estradiol). The tumor incidence was similar in the three groups. However, a higher percentage of regressing tumors was evident in the PL group. Serum PRL, mammary development, and mammary β-casein content were higher in I rats compared to Null. The expression of hormone receptors was similar in the different groups. However, mammary tissue from PL rats bearing tumors had increased expression of PRL and estrogen alpha receptors compared to rats free of tumors. Our results suggest that serum PRL levels do not have relevance on the incidence of tumors, probably because the low levels of PRL in OFA rats are not further decreased by PL like in other strains. However, supraphysiological levels of PRL affect carcinogenesis. PL induces regression of the tumors due to the differentiation produced on the mammary cells. Alterations in the expression of hormonal receptors may be involved in progression and regression of tumors.

Anticancer activity of Astragalus ovinus against 7, 12 dimethyl benz (a) anthracene (DMBA)-induced breast cancer in rats
Objective: Some species of Astragalus are used for the treatment of various types of cancer. The present study was designed to evaluate the anticancer potential of Astragalus ovinus extract (AOE) against DMBA-induced breast carcinoma in rats. Materials and Methods: The anti-tumor and antioxidant effects of AOE were evaluated against DMBA...
متن کاملEffect of Erythropoietin on Serum Brain-derived Biomarkers after Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Rats
Objective(s) Erythropoietin has been shown to exert neuroprotective effects in a variety of CNS injury models. Elevation of serum S100β, as a glial damage marker and myelin basic protein (MBP) has been reported to occur in acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of erythropoietin (EPO) on serum S100β and MBP levels after CO poisoning in rats. Mat...
متن کاملRenoprotective effects of GABA on ischemia/reperfusion- induced renal injury in hyperglycemic male and female rats
Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) has been known as a complex clinical complication in diabetic patients. The main cause of AKI is ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). This study was designed to investigate the protective effects of GABA on renal IRI in hyperglycemic female and male rats. Methods: Sixty STZ induced diabetic male and female Wistar rats were categorized in 10 groups (5 fem...

Objective(s): In this study, the effects of crocin against subchronic toxicity of diazinon (DZN) on systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate (HR) were evaluated in rats. Materials and Methods: Rats were equally divided into 7 groups; control (corn oil), DZN (15 mg/kg), crocin (each group received 12.5, 25 or 50 mg/kg crocin plus DZN), vitamin E (200 IU/kg plus DZN) and crocin (50 mg/kg) tre...
متن کاملThe effect of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells on renal function and histopathology in a rat model of ischemia-reperfusion induced acute kidney injury
Objective(s): It has been shown that adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSC) have protective effects in acute kidney injury (AKI). This study was conducted to assess the therapeutic effects of AD-MSC in rats subjected to acute kidney injury by 45 min of renal ischemia followed by 48 hr of reperfusion (I/R). Materials and Methods:...
